Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On June 8, the Brazilian electricity regulatory agency, ANEEL, held the first power purchase agreement (PPA) auctions since their cancellation in early 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this opportunity, ANEEL held two auctions for new renewable energy to be operational in 2024 and 2025, including hydro, wind, solar and biomass-fired technologies.
Only 51 projects were awarded, totaling less than 1 gigawatt (GW) of planned capacity. By type, 42.7% of the capacity awarded was for windfarms; 27.2% for solar photovoltaic plants; 18.7% for biomass-fired plants; and 11.4% for hydropower plants.
These PPA auctions have been a major driver for the development of renewable projects in Brazil since 2005, and more than 91 GW of new-build capacity have been awarded through them. Another auction that will include natural gas-fired projects is set for September.
