Vogtle Unit 3 Receives Important NRC Finding

SUGAR LAND, TEXAS--August 4, 2022--Written by John Egan for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The owners of Unit 3 at the Alvin W. Vogtle Nuclear Power Station shared some good news Wednesday: receipt of a finding from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) (Rockville, Maryland) that the 1,117-megawatt Unit 3 "has been constructed and will be operated in conformance with the Combined License and NRC regulations. No further NRC findings are necessary in order for Southern Nuclear to load fuel or begin the startup sequence for the new unit," principal owner Georgia Power (Atlanta, Georgia) said in a statement.

Georgia Power, a unit of Southern Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia), owns 45.7% of Unit 3 and Unit 4; the NRC notification did not address Unit 4. Unit 3's other owners are: Oglethorpe Power Corporation (Tucker, Georgia), which owns 30% of that unit; the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (MEAG) (Atlanta), which owns 22.7% of Unit 3; and City of Dalton Utilities (Dalton, Georgia), which owns 1.6% of the unit addition.
