The Russian invasion of Ukraine last year was met with swift sanctions from Western economies wary of the Kremlin's use of energy as a tool for geopolitical leverage. Furthermore, with Russia's economy pegged largely to export revenue, sanctions are designed to diminish the Kremlin's war chest.
