Mitsubishi to Build Poland’s First 600,000-Ton PTA Plant

MHI will also supply major equipment and provide detailed engineering and on site supervision of installation under the engineering, procurement and construction contract.

Released Thursday, September 13, 2007

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Poland’s first purified terephthalic acid (PTA) plant will be built in Wloclawek, 160 kilometers northwest of the country’s capital, Warsaw. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (NYSE:MHVYF ) (MHI) (Tokyo, Japan) has won the contract to build the $800 million plant. MHI will employ its proprietary processing method for PTA production at the plant, which will have a capacity of 600,000 tons per annum.

MHI will also supply major equipment and provide detailed engineering and on site supervision of installation under the engineering, procurement and construction contract. PKN Orlen (Plock, Poland) signed the contract for its subsidiary, Anwil, which will operate the plant. PKN Orlen is one of Central Europe’s largest companies with total annual revenues of about $20 billion. Its operations cover oil refining and petrochemicals. In addition to the production and marketing of plastics and asphalt, PKN Orlen operates about 2,000 gas stations in Poland where it supplies fuels and auto products.

The move into PTA production is motivated by the increased use of plastic bottles as a result of Poland’s economic growth after joining the European Union in 2004. PTA is a major feed for the production of polyester resins and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) used to make plastic bottles.
