Northern States Power Planning for 90-Day Outage at Minneapolis Power Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Northern States Power Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota), a subsidiary of Xcel Energy (NYSE:XEL) (Minneapolis), is planning a major 90-day inspection this fall on its 165-megawatt (MW) Unit 7 at the 403 MW coal/gas-fired Riverside Power Station in Hennepin County in Minneapolis. The outage is scheduled to last until early January 2009.

Unit 7 became operational in April 1987, and the 238 MW Unit 8 came online in April 1964.

Minor details for the outage are still being developed, but the basic scope is to replace the tubes, pull the rotors and inspect the high-pressure and low-pressure heaters, condenser, economizer and associated equipment.

A three-week inspection and repair outage was performed this month on Unit 8.

In addition, Northern States is also working on the two 170 MW gas-fired combustion-turbine additions at the plant that are currently under construction and part of the plant's repowering project.
