Petrobras' REGAP Refinery Plans Maintenance Shutdowns for the Next Four Years

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)-- Petrobras' (NYSE:PBR) refinery REGAP (Refinaria Gabriel Passos), located in the Minas Gerais state of Brazil, will have a major maintenance shutdown at the delayed-coking, diesel-hydrotreament and hydrogen-generation units by the end of August 2008. These maintenance shutdowns will last 30 days. The main work will be performed at the diesel-hydrotreament unit, during which two of the reactor's catalysts will be changed. This unit has a 22,000-barrel-per-day capacity and has been processing since 2005.

In May 2009, a 40-day maintenance shutdown at Kerosene Hydrodesulfurization Unit 106, Diesel Hydrodesulfurization Unit 108, Diesel Hydrodesulfurization Unit 110 and Hydrogen Generation Unit 111 will be performed. In May 2010, the Atmospheric Distillation I, Vacuum Distillation I and Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit II will also undergo maintenance work. Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit I turnaround will take place in 2011, and turnarounds for Atmospheric Distillation II and Vacuum Distillation II will occur in 2012.

Apart from the maintenance shutdowns to be performed during the next four years, REGAP is also planning to build new processing units as part of the Clean Fuel Project, which mainly aims at generating low-sulfur fuels. The latter includes a new 4,500-cubic--meter-per-day diesel hydrotreater supported by a 1-million--cubic-meter-per-day hydrogen-generation unit. The construction of these units is set to begin by mid-2010. Plant officials are currently studying the possibility of building a second delayed coker at the refinery as well.
