Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The nation's second largest ethanol producer, VeraSun Energy Corporation (NYSE: VSE) (Brookings, South Dakota), has delayed the opening of another new fuel ethanol plant. The delay may be affecting the company's value, as the stock is now trading at a near 52-week low at $3.97 per share.
VeraSun CEO Don Endres said "Ethanol is currently being sold at a deep discount to unleaded gasoline, which has caused us to delay the start-up of these facilities until the outlook for ethanol selling prices and overall margins improve."
Construction of the 110-million-gallon-per-year plant is scheduled to be completed this month and the plant will sit idle until market conditions improve.
VeraSun still remains optimistic that ethanol projects nearing completion in Janesville, Minnesota, and Dyersville, Iowa, will go into production as planned.
