Romanian Thermal Power Plant to Commission Natural-Gas-Fired Combined-Cycle Unit

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Romania's state-owned heat and electricity producer Electrocentrale Bucuresti S.A., a subsidiary of Termoelectrica S.A., plans to commission a new natural-gas-fired combined-cycle unit at the CET Vest Power Plant in September. The plant is one of the seven thermal power plants that Electrocentrale has owned since 2002, when the company was created after the restructuring of Termoelectrica S.A.

The CET Vest facility, which has been operational since 1975, has a nominal capacity of 250 megawatts (MW). It is equipped with two fuel-oil-fired Skoda steam turbines operating in base-load mode. In September, a 180-MW combined-cycle block is expected to be commissioned to allow the older fuel-oil-fired units to be used for peaking demand, plant officials told Industrial Info. The unit is undergoing the final stage of execution under an engineering, procurement and construction contract by Siemens (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany), which had acquired the project from VA Tech. The unit consists of one 135-MW General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) gas turbine and one 60-MW Skoda steam turbine, both of which are coupled with two ELIN generators.

The unit addition is a part of Romania's efforts to modernize the country's electricity generation after its incorporation into the European Union in 2007.
