Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--RWE Power (FRA:RWE) (Essen, Germany) has received governmental permission to build and operate a flue gas scrubbing pilot system at the Coal Innovation Centre of the Niederaussem Power Plant in Bergheim, Germany. The system is scheduled to be operational by July 2009 and will separate about 90% of the emissions, or 660 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) per hour.
For this pilot project facility, all aspects of flue gas scrubbing will be tested under real conditions. Beginning in 2020, conventional coal power plants will be refitted with the developed scrubbing system. The investment for the project is about $12 Million, and 40% of that amount will come from government grants.
The partners for this project are BASF (FRA:BAS) (Ludwigshafen, Germany) and Linde AG (FRA:LIN) (Munich, Germany) as announced by RWE. BASF is testing new energy-efficient scrubber liquids to separate the CO2 from the flue gases. Linde is optimizing the installation engineering for the power plant. The main purpose of the project is to reduce the energy expenditure for the flue gas scrubbing process.
