FirstEnergy Resumes Construction of 704-Megawatt Fremont Energy Center for 2010 Completion

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--FirstEnergy Corporation (NYSE:FE) (Akron, Ohio) has hired Aker Construction Incorporated (Canonsburg, Pennsylvania), a subsidiary of Aker Solutions ASA (OSL:AKSO) (Lysaker, Norway), as the engineering and construction contractor to complete the partially constructed Fremont Energy Center. Aker Construction is to resume the construction this month of the 704-megawatt (MW), natural-gas-fired, combined-cycle power station in Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio.

The Fremont Energy Center will utilize a 2-on-1 combined-cycle power train made of two Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation (SWPC) SGT6-500FD natural gas-fired combustion turbine/generators. Heat from each turbine will be captured by one of two Nooter-Erickson heat-recovery steam generators that will drive a single SWPC steam turbine/generator.

The plant was originally developed by Calpine Corporation (NYSE:CPN) (San Jose, California) in the late 1990s, and construction commenced in the fall of 2001 with plans to finish in the summer of 2003. Calpine sold the project to FirstEnergy in 2008. The new construction completion and commercial operations are scheduled for the end of 2010. The Energy Center took more than nine years to complete from the kickoff.
