Researched by Industrial Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Quad/Graphics (NYSE:QUAD) (Sussex, Wisconsin) announced it will shut down its 770,000-square-foot printing plant in Dyersburg, Tennessee. The first layoffs are estimated to affect 165 employees, and the remaining 600 will be out of jobs by November or December 2010.
The final closing will result in a 20% reduction in manufacturing jobs in the Dyersburg area. In addition to the Dyersburg shut down, plants will close by 2011 in Reno, Nevada; Clarksville, Tennessee; Lebanon, Ohio; and Corinth, Mississippi. The loss of the five factories will equal nearly 2.7 million square feet of buildings and have an economic impact on more than 2,200 employees, which is equivalent to 8% of the Quad/Graphics workforce.
General Manager Susan Dew said that Quad/Graphics will consolidate production into facilities with the most efficient and competitive platform. The equipment housed in the closing factories will be shut down and scrapped, permanently removing excess capacity.
President and CEO of Quad/Graphics Joel Quadracci told his workers that their careers did not have to end, and that the company is working hard to make available other opportunities within Quad/Graphics.
