Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The United States Gulf Coast is home to over 2,200 industrial process plants and some of the country's largest manufacturing complexes. Over the last two years, Industrialinfo.com has identified 180 capital and maintenance projects located in the Gulf Coast Region, which have scheduled construction kick-off dates in the second quarter of this year. These projects represent a Total Investment Value (TIV) of over $7.7 billion.
The leading industry sectors for capital spending during the second quarter, ranked by TIV are: power with an overwhelming 70% of the total, then chemical, and petroleum refining, respectively. Ranked by the largest number of projects, the chemical sector with 69 projects moves to the top, followed by petroleum refining, and then power.
Based on Industrialinfo.com's geographic PEC Zones (refer to the following link for a view of IIR's PEC Zones), the three top zones totaling $5.9 billion in forecasted spending, included; Louisiana Zone 2, ranked first accounting for 21 of the 61 reported projects, and Louisiana Zone 6 and Texas Zone 10 tying for second place.
Texas has the largest concentration of plants in the Gulf Coast region. The demand for new power plants, combined with deregulation of the utility industry in the state greatly contributes to the power sector's ability to lead in spending in the region. Texas and Louisiana are also home to some of the largest petrochemical and petroleum refineries in the country as a result of established pipeline infrastructure and access to an abundant supply of feedstock in the region. Gulf Coast marine terminals and ports also play a crucial role in the region's ability to export and import products to and from domestic and international sources.
