More Than 3,500 Megawatts of Coal-Fired Generation Under Development in Florida

These coal-fired units total more than 3,500 megawatts utilizing two technologies. Four units utilize pulverized coal technology, with steam turbine generators. - Includes Flordia Power Generation Chart

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Currently, there are about 50 power-generating units of all fuel types in various stages of development (planned, engineered or under construction) in Florida. These 50 units total 11,600 megawatts of generation capacity. Five units, or about 30% of this generation under development is coal-fired.

If all of these units are constructed and come online, it will increase power generation capacity in Florida by 20%, which would be around 69,000 megawatts. According to Industrialinfo.com’s Power Tracker, Florida has an operational installed base generation capacity of 57,196 megawatts.

These coal-fired units total more than 3,500 megawatts utilizing two technologies. Four units utilize pulverized coal technology, with steam turbine generators. The fifth unit uses coal gasification technology, gasifying coal for an integrated gasification combined-cycle unit and a combustion turbine generator (CT) with a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and a steam turbine. The pulverized coal units will require the best available emission control technology (BACT), such as scrubbers, baghouses, selective catalytic or non-catalytic reduction and upcoming technology equipment to control dust/ash, NOx, SO2, Hg and CO2 emissions. The gasification unit will require less environmental control equipment as most of the emissions are removed as part of the gasification process.
