Energy Producers Plan 92% Increase of Coal-Based Power Generation in Colorado

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Energy producers are evaluating projects, which if realized, will provide a major jump in coal-fired power generation in the state of Colorado. Currently, there are 31 operational coal-fired units producing more than 5,000 megawatts, which represents 43% of the total 11,700 megawatts of operational power generation in the state.

Power generation developers are proposing nine more units for an additional 4,600 megawatts of coal generation. The 4,600 megawatts represents 77% of the more than 6,000 megawatts of total generation that is being studied for construction.

Site studies are being performed for the new units at six separate sites, three at existing power stations, and three grassroot locations. Six of the proposed units plan to use pulverized clean coal technology, utilizing flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers to reduce SO2 emissions, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) units and low NOx burners to reduce NOx emissions, in addition to baghouses to reduce particulate matter.

Two of the other units are being developed as coal gasification projects to provide synthetic gas to operate combustion turbine generators. The last project is a repower project utilizing circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) boiler technology to provide steam for an existing steam turbine generator.
