Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--According to India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, India has achieved a significant milestone in its clean-energy journey by adding a record 31.25 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil fuel power capacity during the financial year 2025-26. This is the highest annual addition ever recorded in the country and clearly reflects the accelerating pace of India's transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
Solar power was the key contributor to this growth, accounting for approximately 24.28 GW of the newly added capacity. This strong performance once again highlights solar energy as the backbone of India's renewable-energy strategy. Alongside solar, other non-fossil sources such as wind, large and small hydro, biomass, and nuclear power also played an important role in strengthening the country's clean-energy mix.
With this latest addition, non-fossil sources now represent around 50% of India's total installed electricity capacity. Reaching this level marks an important achievement, as it places India ahead of its original climate and sustainability targets and demonstrates steady progress toward its long-term net-zero ambitions.
Industrial info is tracking 2,600 renewable energy projects in India, which includes nuclear power, worth US$834.8 billion. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Project Plant Database can see a full list of detailed reports.
