Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - French engineering firm, Alstom S.A. (Levallois-Perret, France) has started installing turbines at its first Polish windfarm project in Kopaniewo in northern Poland.
The company said that work is underway at the 90-megawatt (MW) Lotnisko project, which is being developed by PGE Energia Odnawialna S.A, part of state-owned energy giant, Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) (PW:PGE) (Warsaw, Poland). It is the largest renewable energy project underway by PGE, which supplies nearly all of the country's electricity from coal-fired power plants.
The contract involves the project management, supply, erection and commissioning of ECO110 turbines, each rated at 3 MW. They have a 110 metre diameter rotor on a 90 metre high steel tower and come with a SCADA remote control system. Alstom will also provide operation and maintenance services for two years. The construction project is expected to last until the fourth quarter of next year.
"Alstom is proud to contribute to this project, thus confirming our involvement in the development of the wind power sector and the effort to build a sustainable energy mix in Poland", commented Yves Rannou, Senior Vice President of Alstom Wind business.
PGE has around 300 MW of wind power in place today but is aiming to install a further 234 MW of windfarm energy in 2014-2016.
Poland recently launched a draft energy plan to 2050 in which renewable energy and nuclear power will be used to reduce the country's almost total reliance on coal-fired plants for electricity. Poland uses coal for more than 90% of its electricity needs and is under pressure from the European Union (E.U.) to clean up its mix and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
