Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - French engineering firm, Alstom S.A. (Levallois-Perret, France), has broken into the Polish wind energy market after clinching its first contract for the Lotnisko 90-megawatt (MW) onshore windfarm.

The company has been contracted by project developer PGE Energia Odnawialna S.A to supply 30 of its ECO110 turbines for the project, based in Kopaniewo. At 90 MW, Lotnisko is one of the largest wind projects in the country and commissioning is expected by the end of next year.

The win comes just weeks after Alstom agreed to sell its energy assets and business to U.S. major, General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut), in a deal worth $17 billion. For additional information, see June 24, 2014, article - GE Nears $17 Billion Deal to Buy Alstom's Energy Assets after France Wins Buying Option.

The contract involves the project management, supply, erection and commissioning of ECO110 turbines, each rated at 3 MW. They are equipped with a 110 metre diameter rotor on a 90 metre high steel tower and come with a SCADA remote control system. Alstom will also provide operation and maintenance services for two years.

"A contract for 30 wind turbines delivery opens a new range in a long-term co-operation between our companies," said Krzysztof Mûller, Investments Department Director, PGE Energia Odnawialna S.A. "We are convinced that Alstom competences in Poland in the conventional energy sector, combined with the proven technology represented by ECO110 turbines, will translate into an efficient execution of the contract and guarantee Alstom a successful debut on the Polish wind market."

Lotnisko is a key part of PGE's plan to have at least 234 MW of power from windfarms by 2016.

Yves Rannou, Senior Vice President of Alstom Wind business, added: "Alstom is proud to contribute to the project, thus confirming our involvement in the development of the wind power sector and the effort to build a sustainable energy mix in Poland. With our long-term experience in power projects and local resources at our disposal, Alstom will also take an active part in the project implementation".

Over 130 of the ECO110 model turbines are in place at European windfarms in Spain, Great Britain, Turkey and Finland, Alstom stated. The company's turbines range in power from 1.6 MW to 6 MW. In total, the company has more than 2,600 turbines installed and generating more than 5,000 MW of electricity across 200 windfarms.
