Summary

Of the more than US$1 billion of mining equipment manufacturing projects presently under construction across the world, China accounts for more than 75% of the projects and 86% of the overall spending.

A Clear Leader

Industrial Info Resources data find 25 construction projects geared toward the manufacture of mining equipment across the world, valued at a combined US$1 billion. China clearly emerges at the forefront for projects of this nature, accounting for the large majority of both the number of projects and the overall spending. Finland emerges in a distant second place, primarily thanks to one large project.

Leading Province

China's industry-heavy Shandong province on the east coast garners a substantial amount of the mining equipment construction activity, weighing in with more than US$266 million of current spending.

(As a brief aside, a look at the Industrial Info Resources Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database also shows China towering above other countries in regard to more than US$3 billion of future mining equipment construction projects, again led by Shandong.)

Regarding current Shandong construction projects for mining machinery, a notable entry comes from Shandong Yufei Transmission Technology, which late last year broke ground on an expansion project at its plant in Jining. Some of Shandong Yufei's prime pieces of mining equipment include multi-axle, rear-dump semi-trailers that are designed for transporting ore and other bulk materials. The expansion will allow the company to manufacture around 100 more pieces of equipment a year for items such as a trackless rubber-tired vehicle. The expansion project is expected to be completed later this year.

Other current Shandong mining equipment construction projects include two in the city of Heze in the west of the province. There, Heze Shuanglong Metallurgical Machinery Company is expanding its manufacturing plant to increase production of environmentally friendlier rotary kilns, while Shandong Jingjiang Machinery Manufacturing Company expects to finish construction of a grassroot mining machinery plant in Heze this summer.

Finland Project

The largest mining equipment project presently under construction being tracked by Industrial Info Resources is a long-term relocation project in Tampere, Finland. There, mining equipment leader Metso Corporation is relocating all employees, machinery, etc. from its existing Tampere plant to a new 366,000-square-foot facility in the city. The new plant is meant to modernize Metso's mining equipment production process, allowing the company to improve energy efficiency in the manufacturing process and providing the possibility of expanding the company's product portfolio in the future.

The US$165.2 million relocation began in earnest in the summer of 2024 and is expected to last about three years total, according to Industrial Info Resources data. Subscribers to Industrial Info Resources' GMI Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

North American Activity

Mining equipment activity is noticeably slower in North America, with only a handful of projects planned or underway in the U.S. and Mexico. One of the current U.S. projects comes from mining equipment manufacturer Simmons Equipment Company, which is renovating a 50,000-square-foot former sewing factory in Lebanon, Virginia, to expand its product range. Simmons' current product offerings include continuous miners, scoops, battery haulers, longwall shield haulers and more. The company completed a prior building renovation in Lebanon last summer on a 76,000-square-foot facility. The plants are less than two miles apart.

Renovation seems to be the name of the game in the U.S. mining equipment sector, where Morgan Contracting Incorporated is just getting started on the renovation of a former Halliburton plant in Grand Junction, Colorado, to expand its product line.

Key Takeaways
China easily leads the world in regard to on-the-ground construction projects related to mining equipment manufacturing.
  • Within China, Shandong province leads mining equipment projects both for current and planned activity.
  • The largest mining equipment project outside of China comes from Finnish machinery leader Metso Corporation, which is relocating a manufacturing complex within Tampere, Finland.
