Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Upper Rhine Valley in Germany's southwest is home to one of the largest lithium reserves in Europe. This could be a boon for Germany's green transition, as it looks to diversify its supply of the materials needed to build green technologies like electric cars and wind turbines.
Since 2021, most lithium extracted in Germany has been used to manufacture lithium-ion batteries.
But in comparison to countries like China or Australia, the lithium reserves in Germany are limited, and thus it becomes important to recycle and recover the critical minerals from batteries.
Germany recycles 1,500 metric tons of batteries each year. Lithium-ion batteries are 95% recyclable. Lithium-ion batteries hold their value beyond the life of the battery, allowing recycling facilities to reclaim materials such as high-value anode precious metals like cobalt, nickel and lithium.
Industrial Info is tracking six lithium-ion battery recycling projects in the DACH region of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with a total investment value of US$395.98 million.
