The Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Oregon can't ever get past the regulatory permit process. Planning on the project began in 2012 and its developers expected approval by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and a final investment decision (FID) in 2015.
The approval dates were then moved out to 2016, and then a crushing blow came with a denial from FERC in January 2017. In February 2017, the project developers pre-filed with FERC to start the process all over again. Pembina Pipeline Corporation became the project owner with its purchase of Veresen in 2018. FERC delayed final approval in February 2020, with final approval granted in March 2020.
This month, the state of Oregon denied clean water permits for the project. Once again, Jordan Cove LNG's future is unknown.
