Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Millar Western Forest Products Limited (Edmonton, Alberta) with partner Whitecourt Power L.P. (Whitecourt, Alberta), a Capstone Infrastructure Corporation (Toronto, Ontario) subsidiary, is performing final commissioning and start-up procedures on a biomass-to-energy project located at the Millar Western pulp mill in Whitecourt, Alberta.
The estimated $42 million project has been in the works for the past four years, and the facility is expected to begin power generation by the end of June. The-renewable energy project is also expected to decrease the amount of electricity the mill receives from the grid by 6.2 MW.
The project also represents the first use of anaerobic digestion technology to create biogas at a chemi-thermo-mechanical pulp mill in the Western Hemisphere. The facility will also increase pulp production, reduce treated waste discharge and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Fossil fuel use will be decreased by around 11% overall.
The plant was built by engineering, procurement and construction management company Poyry (Montreal) Incorporated, the North American division of Vantaa, Finland-based Poyry PLC, an international consulting and engineering company.
There are three anaerobic hybrid digesters that will dispose of the pulp mill's organic waste and provide biogas fuel for a new boiler to drive two 2.6-MW GE Jenbacher J620 Model reciprocating engines coupled with two heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) to provide renewable energy to the mill.
The Whitecourt Power biomass facility, which has earned the Canadian federal government's EcoLogo designation certification, began selling renewable energy credits in 2012.
