Siemens is providing various contracting services on more than $42 billion in natural gas-fired projects worldwide, including $4.4 billion worth in the U.S. alone. Two of the highest-valued projects can be found in Ohio, where the Marcellus and Utica shale plays have fueled a years-long buildout in gas-fired power: CME Energy LLC's (Boston, Massachusetts) $860 million Clean Energy Center in the city of Oregon, and Pure Energy Resources LLC's proposed, estimated $860 million Trumbull Energy Center in Lordstown. Both projects are contracting as Siemens as a technology provider, with each utilizing two combustion turbines and a steam turbine; the Oregon unit is expected to generate 955 megawatts (MW), which will be added to the output of the existing 800-MW plant, while the Lordstown plant is designed to generate 940 MW. Clean Energy Future announced in February that the preliminary construction on the Lordstown plant would begin this summer, although Industrial Info does not expect full construction to begin until the fourth quarter. It is located south of the Lordstown Energy Center, at which Clean Energy Future began commercial operations in fourth-quarter 2018.
The Marcellus and Utica shale plays also cover roughly 75% of Pennsylvania, where American Power Ventures LLC (Bernardsville, New Jersey) is expected to begin construction late this year on the $800 million Renaissance Energy Center in Carmichaels. Like the Ohio projects, it is a natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) facility, using a pair of combustion turbines and a steam turbine from Siemens to generate 1,000 MW. Siemens and its subsidiaries also are contractors for more than $53 billion in renewable-energy projects worldwide, including Innogy Renewables US's (Chicago, Illinois) $265 million Scioto Ridge Windfarm in Belle Center, Ohio, which is slated to begin construction before the end of the quarter. Subsidiary Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy S.A. (Zamudio, Spain) is supplying 72 turbines that will generate 115 MW. All turbines are expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2020. Other renewable-fueled projects serviced by Siemens can be found at pulp and paper mills, many of which conserve energy by burning wood waste, such as pellets and residue. Siemens has a hand in two such projects, both of which involve natural gas-fired turbines that supply energy to paper mills: International Paper's (NYSE:IP) (Memphis, Tennessee) $40 million unit replacement at a mill in Riegelwood, North Carolina, and Domtar Corporation's (NYSE:UFS) (Fort Mill, South Carolina) $7 million unit rebuild at a mill in Hawesville, Kentucky.
The units provide their mills with 40 and 88 MW, respectively, via steam turbines; International Paper's project involves replacing two aging turbines with a single, more efficient model.
