New Zealand Explores Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--New Zealand's Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and airline Air New Zealand (Auckland, New Zealand) are supporting a feasibility study to explore LanzaJet's (Deerfield, Illinois) proposal to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) domestically.

Lanzajet's SAF production would focus on the use of woody waste residues and low-value wood products utilizing LanzaTech's Carbon Recycling Technology, which uses gas fermentation technology in converting waste carbon into ethanol, and LanzaJet's Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology, which converts ethanol into SAF. A separate feasibility study will consider municipal solid waste as an added feedstock for the SAF production.

The ongoing feasibility studies are pushing New Zealand to establish a government mandated SAF policy and blending target. Air New Zealand is aiming to use SAF for 10% of its fuel by 2030, which could be a significant step for New Zealand's decarbonization efforts.
