Potencial Biodiesel Ltda has inaugurated its biodiesel plant expansion in Lapa, Rio de Janerio, as part of a R200 million ($37.35 million) investment. The expansion has enabled the plant to increase biodiesel production to more than 832 million liters per year, making it the largest biodiesel plant in Brazil.
The investment marks the beginning of a long-term strategy to turn the Lapa production site into a bioenergy mega-complex. Investments in the coming years are planned for a soybean processing unit and an expansion of the existing 45,000-ton-per-year glycerin refinery to 90,000 tons per year, as well as opening up to new markets such as corn-based fuel ethanol and renewable diesels such as hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
