Among the leading projects of both states is Xcel Energy Incorporated's (NASDAQ:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) Dakota Range Windfarm near South Shore, South Dakota. In keeping with its aim to reduce carbon emissions 80% from 2005 levels by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, Xcel is launching a massive wind power buildout, as seen in this 300+-megawatt (MW) windfarm. The wind facility is being built in two parts, both of which are under construction and anticipated to be completed early next year. Dakota Range I and Dakota Range II will each use 36 Vestas 4.2-MW turbines to generate 151.2 MW. Construction began in summer 2020, with M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis) providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. While the state isn't known for its warm, sunny climate, a solar power project also is underway in South Dakota. Project owner Greenbacker Renewable Energy Company (New York, New York) recently began construction on the Fall River solar plant near Oelrichs. The plant will use 80,000 solar modules for a nameplate generating capacity of 80 MW. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of next year. Among North Dakota's project landscape is WBI Energy Incorporated's (Bismarck, North Dakota) North Bakken Expansion Project, which involves adding approximately 60 miles of 20-inch-diameter natural gas pipeline, a grassroot compressor station and modifications to existing compressor stations to transport up to 250 million cubic feet per day to help reduce associated gas flaring from the area's oil production. Construction kicked off this summer and is expected to wrap up by the end of this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pipeline Project Database can click here for related project reports.

The Food & Beverage Industry rounds out the top three industries in terms of value for project construction in the states, with more than $477 million worth of projects under construction. In North Dakota, Archer-Daniel-Midland Company (NSYE:ADM) (Chicago, Illinois) recently began a soybean processing plant project at the site of a former malting plant in Spiritwood. The project entails constructing a 450,000-square-foot building addition with soybean crushing equipment to process 150,000 bushels per day. Construction is expected to be completed in 2023. Seemingly no U.S. region is without a project by e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), and the Dakotas are no exception, with Amazon projects underway in both states. In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Amazon is constructing a grassroot fulfillment center to expand regional distribution operations. The facility will have five stories and approximately 3 million square feet. According to regional news media, the building is the largest ever built in the state. It is expected to be operational next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for the project report.

Amazon is at work on another grassroot fulfillment center in Fargo, North Dakota, known as Project Force. This facility will be smaller than the one in Sioux Falls, with two stories and about 1.3 million square feet. Construction kicked off late last year, and the facility is expected to be completed in first-quarter 2022. Subscribers can click here for the project report.
