One of the projects pushing the Industrial Manufacturing Industry to the top of the spending list is Atlas Power LLC's (Butte, Montana) construction of a 240-megawatt (MW) data center in Williston, North Dakota, that will be used for cryptocurrency mining. This initial construction is the first of three planned phases and consists of 16 buildings totaling 168,000 square feet. Phases II and III call for increasing power to 500 MW then 700 MW, adding more building and servers as work progresses. According to news media, an inflatable dome will be erected to allow construction to continue through the winter. Construction kicked off early this year and is expected to be completed in early 2024. Other projects under the auspices of the Industrial Manufacturing Industry include Amazon.com Incorporated's (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) Project Stampede, which entails construction of a five-story, 3 million-square-foot fulfillment center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The incomplete center has begun partial operations and is expected to reach full operations next year, when construction is complete. The fulfillment center eventually will operate 24 hours per day, with robots aiding human "pickers" in their work. Subscribers can click here for more details.
With agriculture a primary industry, the Food & Beverage Industry makes a strong showing in North and South Dakota. Among the top projects in this sector is an Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE:ADM) (ADM) (Chicago, Illinois) soybean processing plant in Spiritwood, North Dakota, which is being constructed at brownfield site previously operated by Cargill Incorporated (Wayzata, Minnesota). The project entails a building expansion and installation of soybean-crushing equipment that will be able to process up to 150,000 bushels per day. ADM plans to have the facility operational in time for the 2023 harvest. The oil will help provide feedstock for the U.S.' burgeoning renewable diesel sector as well as food products. Other large Food & Beverage projects in the area include Valley Queen Cheese Factory Incorporated's (Milbank, South Dakota) expansion of its cheese-processing plant in Milbank. The project includes an approximately 200,000-square-foot building addition and the installation of new machinery and systems to increase production. According to a company web page, the expansion will provide the ability to process an additional 3 million pounds of milk each day to produce 125 million more pounds of cheese each year. The project kicked off a couple of months ago and is expected to be completed in 2025. Subscribers can click here for the full report.
Rounding out the top three industries by value is the Power Industry. Such projects include Greenbacker Renewable Energy Company LLC's (New York, New York) construction of a grassroot solar farm in Oelrichs, South Dakota, in the southwest corner of the state. Construction kicked off in late 2021, and upon completion, the facility will use 80,000 solar modules to achieve a nameplate generating capacity of 80 MW. Engineering, procurement and construction contractor Borrego Solar Systems Incorporated (San Diego, California) is expected to complete the project in the first quarter of next year.
