Renewable Fuels, SAF Start to Emerge in Latin America

Made from renewable sources such as agricultural waste (natural fats, vegetable oils and greases), renewable diesel can be refined into a low carbon-fuel that burns cleaner than biodiesel and does not require blending. SAF, on the other hand, enables aircraft operators to reduce their carbon footprint by utilizing renewable biomass and waste resources, in addition to carbon-capture technology.

In Paraguay, ECB Group (Passo Fundo, Brazil) plans to commence site preparation during the second semester of 2023 for a new, 20,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) (renewable diesel) and synthetic kerosene (SAF) plant.SGP Bioenergy's (Santiago, Chile) planned Biorefineria Ciudad Dorada in Panama aims to produce 60,000-BBL/d of HVO and SAF in its first phase, making it the largest biorefinery of its kind in the world.
