The Northeast region includes Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, while the New England region contains Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Project Starts
Project starts in the region are dominated by renewable energy and transmission and distribution (T&D) projects. Among the projects planned to kick off in the quarter is Energy Development Partners' (North Smithfield, Rhode Island) 40-megawatt solar park near West Greenwich, Rhode Island. Woodare & Curran Incorporated (Andover, Massachusetts) is acting as the consultant. The project is planned to wrap up in the third quarter. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Maine, 42 Railroad Ave LLC (Falkville, Alabama) is soon to kick off construction on a 24-MW wood waste-to-energy facility. The brownfield site was purchased in 2017. In a press release, 42 Railroad Ave Chief Executive Officer Steven Johnson said opening the plant involves rebuilding a turbine, activating new transmission lines and building a rotary kiln to produce more than 100 tons per day of activated carbon, which can be used for water and air purification, oil spill cleanup, and trapping mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants. Fastco Corporation (Lincoln, Maine) is the general contractor on the project, which is expected to be completed in the late summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
On the T&D side, PPL Corporation (Allentown, Pennsylvania) is preparing to kick off its $64.2 million Lackawanna-North Meshoppen transmission line rebuild project in Pennsylvania. Construction on the 230-kilovolt transmission line will kick off in the first quarter and be completed in late 2019. The project also includes three substation upgrades. Project Completions Some very big projects are wrapping up in the region in the quarter. Chief among these is Invenergy Renewables LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) Lackawanna Energy Center in Pennsylvania. Construction on the 1,485-MW natural gas-fired facility began in mid-2016, with Kiewit Power Constructors Company (Lenexa, Kansas) providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Also in Pennsylvania, Tenaska Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska) will wrap up the 925-MW Westmoreland Generating Station, a natural gas-fired power station near Smithton. Black & Veatch Incorporated (Overland Park, Kansas) is providing EPC on the project, which has an estimated TIV of $780 million. Construction will take a total of about three years. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
A few renewable energy projects also are finishing. In Antrim, New Hampshire, Walden Green Energy (Portsmouth, New Hampshire) will complete construction on a 28.8-MW windfarm. Construction kicked off last summer, with Reed & Reed Incorporated (Woolwich, Maine) acting as the general contractor. The facility will use nine 3.2-MW Siemens wind turbine-generators.
