By far the largest project planned project start is for a people mover at the LaGuardia Airport in Queens, New York. The project entails constructing an approximately 1.5-mile-long people mover system at the airport connecting to the Long Island Railroad to reduce traffic and passenger congestion. The project expected to kick off early in the quarter and take about four years to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
According to media reports, computer sales in the U.S. spiked in the second quarter of this year as more Americans turned to remote work and school, so ON Semiconductor Corporation (Phoenix, Arizona) is right on target in a planned renovation and expansion of a semiconductor manufacturing plant in Hopewell Junction, New York. New tooling and production equipment will be installed to enable the company to run its first 300-millimeter wafer manufacturing facility. The plant currently produces about 20,000 units a month. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Coupled with the stay-at-home revolution brought about this year is a rise in e-commerce, and the U.S. leader in the field, Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) is investing in the region by the planned construction of a warehouse in Wilmington, Delaware. The 3.7 million-square-foot facility is being constructed at the site of a former General Motors (NYSE:GM) (Detroit, Michigan) assembly plant. The project is expected to be completed by the end of next year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Microgrids are becoming more prevalent as more institutions seek to shift away from the grid or incorporate renewable energy into their operations. A few such projects are planned to kick off in New York. The State University of New York plans to install 50-megawatt (MW) solar array across the North, South and Downtown campuses in Buffalo. The project is part of a larger plan to install solar arrays across the university and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. In Brooklyn, New York, the Kings County Hospital will convert its 2 MW of diesel generators to operate on both diesel and natural gas. While the project was slowed due to COVID-19, it is expected to be completed in the coming summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Buffalo and Brooklyn projects.
In more traditional manufacturing sectors, Can-Pack SA (Krakow, Poland) plans to construct an aluminum can manufacturing plant on a brownfield site in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, in the northeast of the state. The project calls for the demolition of an existing 1 million-square-foot facility, followed by the construction of a 908,000-square-foot manufacturing facility that also will encompass an operations center. Blue Rock Construction Incorporated (Allentown, Pennsylvania) is the general contractor on the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
