Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--E-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) and major product retailers are expanding their warehousing and distribution capacity across the U.S. Industrial Info is tracking up to $2.3 billion worth of warehousing and distribution-center projects that could begin construction in the fourth quarter.
Amazon leads all companies in the number of projects expected to kick off from August through December, including building renovations and structural modifications at two delivery centers.
A $16.7 million project in Austin, Texas entails revamping a 160,000-square-foot warehouse and constructing a 40,000+-square-foot canopy, to support regional last-mile distribution/delivery operations in the Austin area. "Last-mile" refers to an order's final stop before delivery. Meanwhile, a $20 million project in Jacksonville, Florida will revamp a 272,190-square-foot building on a 39-acre site. Both projects are expected to wrap up by the fourth quarter of 2025.

Dick's Sporting Goods (NASDAQ:DKS) (Coraopolis, Pennsylvania) is gearing up for the construction of a $98 million grassroot warehouse and distribution center in Fort Worth, Texas. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows a preliminary estimate of U.S. retail e-commerce sales for second-quarter 2024, adjusted for seasonal variation but not for price changes, was $291.6 billion--an increase of 1.3% from the first quarter; total retail sales for the second quarter were estimated at $1.826.9 billion, up 0.5% from the first quarter. Further, e-commerce sales in the second quarter accounted for an estimated 16% of total retail sales.
