Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--West Australian company Monadelphous Group (Perth, Australia) has been awarded a contract by QGC, a subsidiary of BG Group, for its Queensland Curtis LNG (QCLNG) production plant on Curtis Island, offshore from Gladstone in Eastern Queensland, for maintenance services during the operational phase.
The QCLNG plant is under construction along with two other large-scale LNG projects on the island: Gladstone LNG (GLNG), which is operated by Santos (Adelaide, Australia), and Australia Pacific LNG (APLNG), which is operated by ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) (Houston, Texas). The QCLNG was the first of the three to begin construction in 2010. The foundation phase's two-train development will become operational in the latter half of 2013, and the first LNG export shipments will begin in 2014.
Monadelphous will provide core maintenance and shutdown services, with the contract commencing in January 2013. This is a long-term maintenance agreement, with an initial six-and-a-half year term secured by Monadelphous.
Monadelphous has been successful in winning similar long-term contracts in Australia for the Darwin LNG plant and the massive Karratha LNG plant. Monadelphous has been the main maintenance and shutdown services provider for Darwin LNG, which is operated by ConocoPhillips, since before operations began in 2006. The Karratha Gas Plant, a five-train LNG production plant, has been operating since 1989. Monadelphous is in the process of mobilizing a team to a maintenance site at Karratha Gas plant and will be ready to officially begin the contract term by January 2013.
The QCLNG project will convert coal-seam gas (CSG) (also known as coal-bed methane) to liquefied natural gas (LNG) for export from Curtis Island. The upstream development includes about 2,000 coal-seam gas wells, gas-gathering pipelines, field compressor stations and central processing plants. Earlier this month, Transfield Services (North Sydney, Australia) won the maintenance contract for gasfields and pipeline facilities along the 540-kilometer (approximately 335-mile) main export pipeline from the Surat basin to the QCLNG production plant on Curtis Island. This contract, which is worth more than $200 million, will begin in January 2013 and will run for an initial term of five years.
The contract won by Monadelphous will be handled out of the company's Gladstone operations base, and will include the provision of labour and equipment to support QGC's warehouses, along with the supply and operation of cranes, scaffolding, mechanical and electrical equipment. Approximately 40 workers will be assigned by Monadelphous for general day-to-day maintenance, and 200 for scheduled plant shutdowns. Rob Velletri, the managing director of Monadelphous, said, "We're pleased to have QGC as a major new customer and to become a key service provider on one of Queensland's first coal-seam gas LNG plants."
Monadelphous is celebrating great success in 2012 with a multitude of key construction and maintenance contract awards in the Australian mining and oil and gas industry.
