Rajasthan to Build World's Largest Solar Thermal Park

Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Indian government is planning to set up 4,000 megawatts (MW) of solar thermal power capacity in Rajasthan to create the world's largest solar thermal park.

"We have discussed the plant with the Rajasthan government and we aim to set up a solar thermal capacity near the Sambhar salt lake in Jaipur," said Farooq Abdullah, the Federal Minister for New and Renewable Energy.

The project will be commissioned in phases, with the first phase contributing 1,000 MW. Rajasthan currently has 660 MW of installed solar power generation. The new project will be the first solar thermal power park in India. There is a photovoltaic (PV) solar park in Gujarat that currently has a capacity of 214 MW, and a fully commissioned target of 500 MW in 2014.
