Kuwait National Petroleum Company Awards Honeywell Major Contract for Al Zour Refinery

Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The integrated control and safety system (ICSS) contract for Kuwait National Petroleum Company's (KNPC) greenfield, 615,000-barrel-per-day Al Zour refinery complex has been awarded to Honeywell International Incorporated (NYSE:HON) (Morristown, New Jersey).

Honeywell also will provide the front-end engineering design (FEED) for the refinery, which is to be constructed in southern Kuwait.

Honeywell will supply its Experion PKS product as the main control system for the new refinery complex and integrate process automation systems throughout the site. With Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS) performing FEED for the system, consistent deigns from other contractors will be driven throughout the entire project, which will assist in accelerating the total project completion date.

The total production capacity of Kuwait's existing refineries is 930,000 barrels per day. When the new refinery is commissioned in 2018, that capacity will soar to 1.545 million barrels per day.

KNPC General Manager James King said that the company will become one of the largest producers of clean fuels in the Middle East when the new refinery comes online. The refinery will assist in meeting local demand and will export ultra-low sulfur product, including fuel oil, diesel and kerosene, plus petrochemical feed stocks.

Honeywell has been providing state-of-the-art technologies to KNPC's refineries since the early 1980s.
