While most analysts are in agreement that no significant changes in regard to lifting the U.S. ban on most crude oil exports will be made before the November elections, those in favor of changing the 39-year-old law are increasingly enumerating and explaining the benefits of changing the policy to allow U.S. crude oil to enter the global market.

In September, think-tank the Brookings Institution published Changing Markets: Economic Opportunities from Lifting the U.S. Ban on Crude Oil Exports, a report weighing the pros and cons of lifting the export ban. In a panel discussion in Washington, D.C., Rice University economist Kenneth Medlock suggested that lifting the ban could help the U.S. avoid an economic "train wreck." A report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) about the issue is imminent.
