Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Nigeria has the ability to transform from just producing oil to producing both oil and gas in the next three years, according to Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) Managing Director Clay Neff. In addition to completing its gas projects under construction, Chevron (NYSE:CVX) (San Ramon, California) will make gas that is produced in deep water viable and accessible to market investors. Chevron operates in Nigeria under a joint-venture arrangement with Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (Abuja, Nigeria).
Chevron has increased gas produced at the Escravos gas plant from 50 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) to 590 mmscf. Best-quality product is supplied to Nigeria and the other West African nations of Ghana, Togo and Benin. Neff said Chevron will be involved in the construction of the Funiwa liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant and the development of the Funiwa field, as part of an agenda to monetize gas resources in Nigeria.

Chevron currently accounts for 450 mmscf of gas that is supplied to the Nigerian domestic economy. Through current reforms in the petroleum industry, which are being made by the federal government, gas will be made available to all end users in the country, with policies that will encourage investors to look into the oil and gas sectors.
Chevron Nigeria Limited also is maintaining its campaign to reduce gas flaring at its Nigerian installations by 98% in 2015. The company has achieved 60% reduction so far.
