Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A record shipment of wood fuel pellets is set to arrive in England by July 4, according to Pinnacle Renewable Energy (Prince George, British Columbia). Loaded with more than 60,000 tons of fuel pellets, the "M/V Popi S" recently left Prince Rupert, British Columbia, and will arrive at the U.K. port city of Immingham after a 30-day-plus voyage, according to Pinnacle.
Chartered by Grieg Star Shipping (Bergen, Norway), the "M/V Popi S" is carrying pellets for Drax Power's (North Yorkshire, England) new biomass power unit, which is located in Selby, North Yorkshire.
The 660-megawatt (MW), coal-fired power plant converted Unit 3 into a biomass-fired facility in August 2014.
Pinnacle's export terminal in British Columbia consists of seven corrugated metal silos, each with a storage capacity of more than 12,000 tons of pellets. There are two fully enclosed receiving belt conveyors, three enclosed transfer belt conveyors with legs, and two low-speed bucket elevators that can load ships or silos.
The railcar unloading station can handle 36 full and 36 empty railcars daily. The export terminal cost an estimated $30 million to construct. The terminal was built by CMC Engineering and Management (Burnaby, British Columbia).
Using the Panamax-class Popi S to haul wood pellets to Europe via the Panama Canal highlights the growing reach of shipments in and out of the Port of Prince Rupert.
