Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The recovering U.S. automotive industry and a growing demand for electronics components are fueling some of the highest-value mineral-processing projects set to begin construction in the U.S. and Canada in fourth-quarter 2015. Industrial Info is tracking $1.15 billion in active mineral-processing projects set to kick off from October through December, with a wide variety of products among the 10 highest-valued, including carbon fibers, graphite, concrete, limestone and lime.

A single project accounts for more than half of the total spending: Toray Industries Incorporated's (Tokyo, Japan) $600 million carbon fiber-manufacturing plant in Moore, South Carolina. The first phase of a two-phase project involves building a facility to produce 1,800 to 2,000 metric tons per day of polyacrylonitrile-based carbon-fiber and prepreg products, including related manufacturing and manufacturing-recovery processes and 14 natural gas-fired boilers. Toray believes the plant eventually could serve automotive and aircraft makers both inside and outside the U.S. For details on this construction project, see Industrial Info's project report.

Don Myers, senior manager for aerospace sales and marketing for Toray, told USA Today and other reporters last month that the new facility will help Toray support The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) (Chicago, Illinois), its biggest carbon-fiber customer. According to USA Today, Myers added that the facility will "help us probably support some of our Latin American customers, when it comes to fiber. I think at some point it may have some role to play in the automotive business as well, through the Ohio Valley up there going towards Michigan."

The second highest-value project in the U.S. is Alabama Graphite Corporation's (Vancouver, British Columbia) $90 million construction of a graphite mine in Sylacauga, Alabama. The facility is an open pit mine and processing plant that is designed to produce 1,500 to 2,500 tons per day. Last month, Alabama Graphite initiated a pilot plant at SGS Mineral Services (Lakefield, Ontario) for the Sylacauga project. For details on this construction project, see Industrial Info's project report.

Graphite is used in "many high-value applications--namely lithium-ion batteries for use in electric vehicles and grid storage/stationary batteries, but also in portable electronic applications, which represent a significant and growing market with enduring future demand," said Donald Baxter, the co-chief executive officer of Alabama Graphite, in a press release last week.

The highest-value mineral-processing project set to begin construction in Canada in the fourth quarter is Graymont Limited's (Richmond, British Columbia) $67.99 million construction of a limestone quarry and lime plant in Giscome, British Columbia. The first phase of the project involves building a 600,000-ton-per-year limestone quarry and a 200,000-ton-per-year lime plant; later phases will increase quarry production to 1.2 million tons per year and lime production to 400,000 tons per year, and eventually 1.7 million and 600,000 tons per year, respectively. For details on this construction project, see Industrial Info's project report.

The seven other highest-value mineral-processing projects set to begin construction in the U.S. and Canada in the fourth quarter are:
  • $60 Million: Lafarge Canada Incorporated's Precast Concrete Plant in Edmonton, Alberta
For details on this construction project, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $60 Million: White Haven Sands LLC's Silica Sand Plant in Bloomer, Wisconsin
For details on this construction project, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $40 Million: Hexcel Corporation's Production Line 15 at Carbon Fiber Manufacturing Plant in West Valley City, Utah
For details on this construction project, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $40 Million: Hexcel Corporation's Production Line 16 at Carbon Fiber Manufacturing Plant in West Valley City, Utah
For details on this construction project, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $40 Million: McInnis Cement Company's Oak Point Cement Distribution Warehouse in Bronx, New York
For details on this construction project, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $30 Million: Vulcan Materials Company's Austin Aggregate Quarry in Madera, California
For details on this construction project, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • $29.5 Million: Heidelberg Cement AG's Parsons Creek Limestone Quarry in Fort McMurray, Alberta
For details on this construction project, see Industrial Info's project report.
Almost 90% of the total investment value (TIV) of mineral-processing projects set to begin construction in the U.S. and Canada in the fourth quarter--about $1.01 billion--is related to projects that are now in the planning stages, where plenty of factors could increase, decrease or eliminate the expected spending. The market also has about $135 million of such projects in the engineering stages, while $8 million worth already have kicked off the first stage of construction and will kick off the next in the fourth quarter.
