Nevada Gigafactory to Make Batteries for Tesla's Model 3 Car

A "gigafactory" in Nevada will make the batteries for Tesla's Model 3.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)-Industrial Info is tracking Tesla Motors Incorporated's (NASDAQ:TSLA) (San Carlos, California) $5 billion "gigafactory," which will manufacture the lithium-ion batteries for the company's recently unveiled Model 3 electric car.

Tesla is marketing the Model 3 for mass consumption. The four-door sedan gets 215 miles per charge and supercharging for long distance trips, and can seat five adults. Its price tag starts at $35,000.

Model 3 is engineered to go from zero to 60 miles per hour in six seconds, with autopilot hardware, and will be shipped in North America beginning in late 2017. Deliveries to Europe and other sounding countries will begin once production ramps up. Those who want to reserve a model must put $1,000 down.

The gigafactory is under construction in McCarran, Nevada, where 35 gigawatt hours in battery cells, modules and packs will be manufactured to supply Tesla's vehicle assembly plant in Fremont, California. The Nevada plant will produce 500,000 battery packs per year by 2020.
