Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A fire broke out Thursday at Motiva Enterprises's 230,000 barrel-per-day (BBL/d) oil refinery in Convent Louisiana. The blaze was reported about 11 a.m. at the 45,000-BBL/d hydrocracker unit. The refinery was evacuated and no injuries were reported. Air quality monitoring was being conducted to make sure there was no community impact, according to news accounts.
Motiva is a joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE:RDS.A) (The Hague, Netherlands) and Saudi Aramco (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia). The two controlling companies announced plans to split earlier this year, agreeing to divide their assets. Shell is set to take over the Louisiana refineries, including Convent.
The Convent refinery is located in St. James Parish, along the Mississippi River. Built by Texaco in 1967, it is an integrated oil refinery that produces a full slate of conventional petroleum products including regular, premium and low-sulfur gasoline. The refinery produces reformulated and conventional gasoline, primarily for the southeastern United States.
