Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). According to Sergio Rezende, Brazils Minister of Science and Technology, President Lula Da Silva is to announce the restart of Angra III construction which will be almost a replica of the already existing Angra II and have a generating capacity of 1,350 MW.
At present, Brazil holds the worlds sixth largest uranium geological reserve. However, since the current amount is based on geological researches carried out in only 25% of the national territory, experts state that with new mineral research it can be expanded and become the second largest reserve.
The country has two nuclear power plants currently operating: Angra I and II, which operate with pressurized water reactors and have a current operating capacity of 1,580 MW. Orthon Luiz da Silva, Electronuclears President, subsidiary of Eletrobras Termonuclear SA and Brazils state owned company responsible for the countrys nuclear power projects, stated that the construction of this nuclear power plant will demand a total investment of $926 million and the startup is expected for 2013. Angra III is not part of PAC, Brazils growth acceleration program, so it will be included in a specific Brazilian nuclear program. In 1999, Eletronuclear invested $750 million in Angra III equipment and since then, the company has spent $20 million in maintaining it.
Brazils federal environmental protection agency, Ibama, required specific environmental impact studies about the restart of the nuclear plant construction. Brazils government is awaiting those licenses and construction permits in order to conclude the construction of Angra III, which is considered essential for country to avoid power shortages in the near future.
