RWE Selects Site for 1,650 MW CCGT United Kingdom Power Plant

The compact $1.15 billion power station will be located on a brownfield site which has housed two previous coal fired stations. RWE received

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). RWE Npower (Reading, England) has selected the site for its state-of-the-art 1,650 MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) in the United Kingdom. Staythorpe in Nottinghamshire got the decision ahead of Pembroke in South Wales. Permitting and consent have been passed and a gas pipeline and other infrastructure are already in place at the site.

The compact $1.15 billion power station will be located on a brownfield site which has housed two previous coal fired stations. RWE received planning consent for Staythorpe in 1993 and began construction in 1998, but the project was put on hold when it was deemed that the UK had developed enough generating power to meet electricity demand at the time.

Staythorpe will be constructed with the latest technology and will produce less than half the CO2 per unit of electricity generated compared to a traditional coal fired station. The project will create over 80 long-term high quality jobs and will be built with the full engagement of local stakeholders and parish councils. At full operating capacity the four generating units will produce enough power for 2 million homes, equivalent to the whole of Nottinghamshire.

Construction is expected to start later in 2007 and the first unit will be operational by 2010. Construction of the project is 10% complete including the construction of foundations and perimeter roads. Alstom have been selected as the main contractor.

RWE will continue to work with stakeholders and local authorities to secure planning permission for a CCGT power station at Pembroke.
