Two Units at Bolivar Hydroelectric Complex Taken Offline in Unplanned Outage

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Jose Antonio Paez Hydroelectric Complex, which is owned and operated by Compañía Anónima de Administración y Fomento Eléctrico (Cadafe), shut down Units 3 and 4 for impeller repairs after over-accumulation of sediment because of heavy rains in the past few months. Maintenance personnel, currently performing the rectification works, began repairs September 1 and hope to bring both units back online by the end of the month.

Unit 2 has recently begun the maintenance, rehabilitation and modernization process, as part of a plant-rehabilitation program that will replace all generators and rotor coils, modernize control systems and upgrade the technology. The $15 million contract was awarded to Alstom Hydro Brazil and is expected to be completed by the end of 2008.

Jose Antonio Paez Hydro Power Plant in Bolivar state began commercial operations in 1973. The plant consists of four Charmilles Pelton turbines that generate a total of 240 megawatts of capacity.
