DeWind Ships Wind Turbine to Argentina’s San Juan

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Composite Technology Corporation (CTC) recently announced that its subsidiary DeWind Incorporated has shipped the first 2-megawatt (MW) D8.2 wind turbine to the Chilean branch of the British renewable generation company Seawind, a leading international wind power firm. This turbine, manufactured in Germany, has begun a long journey to San Juan, where it will be installed at 4,000 meters above sea level near the Veladero gold mine in Argentina.

Veladero, owned by Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:ABX ), is in the Cuyo region of western Argentina about 320 kilometers northwest of San Juan in the highly prospective Frontera District. Veladero’s proven and probable gold reserves are estimated at 11.1 million ounces with annual production expected to average 525,000-550,000 ounces per year. The mine is located at elevations of between 4,000 and 4,850 meters above sea level and comprises two open pits: Filo Federico to the north and Amable to the south. Barrick is one of the largest gold producers in the world with operations and development projects in the United States, Canada, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Australia and Tanzania.

The 2 MW turbine will be the only multi-megawatt turbine operating at that elevation. According to CTC CEO Benton Wilcoxon, the installation should provide valuable information for both companies to determine the effectiveness of future installations at high elevation.

CTC, based in Irvine, California, develops, manufactures and sells innovative high-performance electrical transmission and renewable energy generation products through its subsidiaries DeWind and CTC Cable Corporation.
