China Guangdong Nuclear Starts Up its First Wind Power Project in Northeastern China

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Phase I of the Dagangzi windfarm, the first wind power project of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC) (Shenzhen, China), recently went into commercial operation in northeastern China's Jilin Province. The windfarm is located in Baicheng, an economic hub in the Nengjiang River Valley next to the border of the Ke'ergin Grassland with strong winds that blow in from Siberia.

The windfarm has a total planned capacity of 200 megawatts (MW). Phase I includes 33 wind turbines, and Phase II is expected to go into operation in June 2008. Upon completion, the project could sell about 200 million kilowatt-hours of electricity to the grid each year and help alleviate the area's power shortage. Compared to a conventional coal-fired power plant, the project could save more than 60,000 metric tons of standard coal and reduce the SO2 emissions by about 1,080 metric tons every year and about 45,000 metric tons of CO2 every year.

CGNPC has finalized its strategy to focus on nuclear power as its main business and wind power as its second business. CGNPC has other wind power projects, as well: Tenghuiliang windfarm (Inner Mongolia), Cabei windfarm (Hebei Province), Daliang windfarm (Gansu Province) and Taishan windfarm (Guangdong Province). These projects have a total capacity of more than 650 MW either under construction on in pre-stage preparation. CGNPC's total installed capacity of wind power is expected to reach 1,500 MW in 2010 and more than 7,000 MW in 2020.
