Korea's Posco Awarded Two Contracts for Power Projects in Chile

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--South Korean builder Posco Engineering & Construction Company Limited (Pohang City) recently signed an $870 million engineering, procurement and construction contract with power company AES Gener (Santiago de Chile), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia), to build a coal-fired power plant in northern Chile's Antofagasta.

The plant will have a total capacity of 520 megawatts (MW) and will be equipped with two Ansaldo 260 MW turbo generators and two Alstom boilers, AES Gener authorities told Industrial Info.

Engineering and soil analysis are being conducted, and construction is scheduled to begin in June. Completion is expected in the third quarter of 2011.

Posco also has recently signed a similar contract with AES Gener to build the $440 million Campiche coal-fired plant in the Municipality of Ventanas, which is about 100 kilometers northwest of Santiago, Chile's capital. The Campiche plant will have a power output of 270 MW, and its construction is scheduled to begin within the next eight months, official said. The plant would be operational by 2011.

AES Gener is the largest thermal generator and second largest electricity generator in Chile. The company owns and operates a mix of power plants, including those that operate on coal, gas, diesel, biomass and water. AES Gener supplies electricity to the northern and central region of the Andean country, where more than 90% of the population lives.

Posco E&C is increasingly strengthening its presence in Central America and South America. It also has recently signed a $500 million engineering, procurement and construction contract with AES Fonseca (El Salvador) to build a coal-fired power plant in El Salvador.
