FPL Prepares to Begin Construction on 100-Megawatt Windfarm in Iowa

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, TX)--In April, FPL Energy LLC (NYSE:FPL) (Juno Beach, Florida) and its subsidiary Crystal Lake Wind LLC, along with general contractor D. H. Blattner & Sons (Avon, Minnesota), began site preparations for a 100-megawatt (MW) windfarm near Crystal Lake outside of Britt, Iowa. FPL and D. H. Blattner & Sons began civil site construction in the last part of 2007, but construction stopped when winter weather set in.

Mechanical construction is scheduled to begin in June 2008 with completion scheduled in the fourth quarter. The Crystal Lake facility will consist of 67 structural steel towers that will be outfitted with 1.5 MW General Electric wind turbine generator sets for the first phase. Construction will begin in the fourth quarter of this year for the 200 MW Phase II, which will consist of 80 steel towers outfitted with Clipper's 2.5 MW Liberty wind turbine generator sets.

FPL currently is awaiting approval from the Iowa Utilities Board on a transmission line that will run from the Crystal Lake windfarm to the Lime Creek power station south of Manly, Iowa. The $408 million project should be online and operating in the second or third quarter of 2009.
