BE&K and Ajax Joint Venture Wrap Up Construction of $72 Million Chemical Sciences Lab at FSU

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A formal ribbon-cutting was held May 2, 2008, in Tallahassee to celebrate the opening of Florida State University's (FSU) new $72 million Chemical Sciences Laboratory. Built under a joint venture between the BE&K Building Group (Greenville, South Carolina) and Ajax Construction (Tallahassee, Florida), the building began construction in 2003 and has been reported on dating back to 2002 in Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online Database.

Designed By O'BrienAtkins (Research Triangle Park, North Carolina), the five-story, 168,000-square-foot building was built to house both research and educational space. With room for up to 250 research scientists, the new lab features:

•First floor: core research facilities and lecture hall
•Second-fourth floors: flexible laboratories space
•Fifth floor: synthetic organic chemistry labs
•Equipment/features: 145 fume hoods, chilled water and pure nitrogen gas supply, natural gas, steam and vacuum pressure, distilled water

FSU will utilize the new building to expand its already considerable studies into molecular recognition, materials, nanotechnology, biochemistry, molecular synthesis, computational chemistry and advanced measurement science. A portion of the funding for the project was derived from patent royalties sourced from the successful research activities of the university's existing chemistry faculty.
