Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A consortium of Brazil-based power companies will upgrade six generators, as well as velocity regulators and the telecommunication control system at the 1,050-megawatt (MW) Luiz Carlos Barreto de Carvalho hydropower plant in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The consortium is headed by Alstom Brasil (Sao Paulo), a subsidiary of Alstom SA (EPA:ALO) (Paris, France) and includes GE Hydro Inepar do Brasil SA, a subsidiary of GE Power (Atlanta, Georgia), itself a branch of General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut), as well as Camargo Correa (Sao Paulo) and CNEC Engenharia.
The consortium will soon complete the modernization of the first of six of the plant's power-generation units. Rehabilitation of a second unit should be completed by September 15, with the unit coming back online by the beginning of October. Another generating unit will be taken offline for modernization from mid-October to April 2009.
Rehabilitation of the whole plant, which is owned by Furnas Centrais Eletricas S.A. (Rio de Janeiro), is estimated to be complete by the end of 2010. The $271 million project consists of implementing a remote control system and increasing the reliability of each of the six 175- MW Voith Siemens Francis turbines.
