E&C Firms Identified in North American Industrial Projects Total $336 Billion So Far in 2008

Since the beginning of the year, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) has reported more than 1,900 major industrial projects in North America (U.S., Canada and Mexico) with engineering and/or construction firms identified. These projects represent $336 billion in total investment value (TIV). This equals about 34% of the total number of projects reported during the first six months of 2008 that had engineering and construction firms identified. These projects range in timing from those in the early planning stages, such as market analysis and site study, to those in the advanced construction stages.

As can be seen from the chart, the Power Industry has the most projects with E&C firms identified with 311 projects totaling $153 billion. In the Power Industry, ENMAX Corporation (Calgary, Alberta), owned by the City of Calgary, recently awarded Hatch-Sargent & Lundy (Calgary, Alberta) the engineering contract for a grassroot, 120-megawatt peaking power plant to be built in Airdrie, Alberta.

The Metals & Minerals Industry is second in project value for projects with E&C firms identified with 161 projects totaling $40 billion. During the first quarter of 2008, Freeport-McMoRan's (NYSE:FCX) began operation at the newest copper mine in the U.S., in Safford, Arizona. The company produced 20 million pounds of copper during the first quarter 2008 on its way to a design capacity of 240 million pounds of copper per year. In a move to control feedstock costs, Freeport-McMoRan selected Aker Solutions, formerly Aker Kvaerner to engineer a $100 million sulfuric acid plant at the Safford mine. Construction on this project is expected to begin fall 2008.
