Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A major maintenance project is being performed at the 21-megawatt (MW) thermal power station in Trujillo, Peru, after the unit was forced to come offline due to vibration faults in the generator bearings. According to plant officials, the rotor may be sent to Lima for repair. The power station is owned and operated by Duke Energy Egenor, a subsidiary of Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE: DUK).
According to plant officials, inspection of the combustion chamber, which was scheduled for December 2008, has been postponed to the first quarter of 2009 as the unit has not reached the required operating hours. Trujillo Thermal Plant has been operating since 1973 and is equipped with a 21-MW General Electric (NYSE:GE) MS5001 gas turbine fueled by oil.
In Latin America, Duke Energy's primary assets include over 4,000 MW of hydroelectric and thermal generating capacity. In Peru, Duke Energy Egenor owns two hydroelectric power stations in Canon del Pato and Carhuaquero, as well as six thermal plants, all of which are located in the north of the country. The thermal plants are in Chimbote (44 MW), Trujillo (21 MW), Chiclayo (24.4 MW), Piura (40.4 MW), Paita (5.8 MW) and Sullana (8.5 MW).
